Note taking apps like Evernote and Microsoft’s OneNote can increase your productivity while organizing your most important projects. One feature that can make these applications even more useful is the ability to save emails as notes directly from your email program.

Here are some scenarios where this feature is helpful:
If you are about to go on a trip, you will want all your transportation and reservation confirmation information in one location. You can create a notebook for the trip then send all emails regarding the trip to this notebook. You can even set your email program to automatically forward all emails with the trip name in the subject line to your Evernote or OneNote account.
When working on a project, you get a large volume of project-related email. Working on multiple projects? The amount of email goes up, and things start getting buried. You can create rules to send project related emails to your OneNote account, then sort and tag them by project name. Now you have all your project related emails in one notebook.
Here is how to use the email-to-note tools within OneNote and Evernote:
Evernote
To find your Evernote email address:
On Windows and Mac go to “Account Info”.
On Evernote Web, go to “Account Info,” then “More Account Settings”.
On iPhone and iPad, go to the “Sync” tab.
On Android devices, go to “Settings” then “account info.”
  • The subject line of the email is the title of the new note.
  • You can send the email to a specific notebook by adding “@” and the notebook name to the subject line of the email.
  • You can add a tag to the note using “#” followed by an existing tag.
  • If you are using both the notebook name and tags, be sure to include the notebook name first, followed by the tags.
  • The account must be synched before using recently created notebooks and tags.
OneNote
In OneNote, you will need to first configure an email address for your OneNote Account. You can do this at https://www.onenote.com/EmailSettings.
After you have selected your email address, you will be prompted to pick which default notebook and notebook section you want to use when saving your emails.
  • The subject line of the email is the title of the new note.
  • To save your email to a different section within the default notebook, simply add the “@” symbol followed by the section name in the subject line of your email.
